this week

July 26 - August 1, 2010

This week's scripture verse:  Test me, O Lord, and try me, examine my heart and my mind; for your love is ever before me, and I walk continually in your truth. (Psalm 26:2-3).

As I prepared my message for this past weekend I was struck by Esther and her conversation with Mordecai. If you were in the services or know the story (the Book of Esther, chapter 4),you know that Esther resisted the idea of intervening on behalf of the Jews. Most of us can relate. We are surrounded by people headed for destruction in that they are disconnected from Jesus Christ. The question for us is the same as it was for Esther . . . will we have the heart to step into their lives and share Christ? Do we have enough heart to actively point them towards faith in Christ?

I can hear what you're thinking . . . "Heart, you say? I think for most Christ-followers it's a lack of courage or training that keeps us from sharing our faith."
I disagree. While I don't discount either courage or training, I think first of all it’s about heart. In fact, my observation is that when we fail to act it's more often about lack of motivation (that is, lack of heart) than lack of skill or courage. I think motivated people find ways to overcome lack of courage and lack of skill. .

So, where's your heart with regard to sharing your faith in Christ? Do you need a heart change? Have you begun praying that all-important prayer . . . "Lord, break my heart for those who are distant from You"? In a day when so many clearly do not yet know Christ, I cannot think of a more significant prayer. Especially in a day when the Church of Christ seems so often unmotivated by the Great Commission -- I cannot think of a more urgent prayer.

A Summer Serve Team Report
It is incredible to watch music bring life back into someone's eyes. During one of the elderly outreach days, we went to an assisted living home right down the street from KPC. I didn't even know it existed. As we walked in the doors, several elderly people were sitting in the common room, waiting to see what we had in store. To my delight, we decided to sing hymns. One woman lit up as the soundtrack started. She was almost completely deaf, but when the music came on, she sang with gusto right along to the soundtrack! She knew each and every word. Her body was frail, but I've never seen such joy in someone's eyes. She told me about how much she loved Jesus, and described her life as blessed. I came away that afternoon aware that God resides in and delights in His people.

Do you want experiences like this? Our Hope Team visits the elderly twice a month, and each time reports come back with how wonderful the experience was. Don't miss out! Join the team and contact Kara Hanger.

To get involved with serving, you can also check out the Serve Hampton Roads Calendar.

Flip Kids Summer Curriculum

Flipt kids has a new summer curriculum and format. The curriculum, Chase the Light, takes a look at stories of people who came into contact with Jesus and how He changed their lives forever. They weren't always the most probable people around. In fact, As Pastor Nate would say, they were "unlikely people."

We need some "unlikely people" to help us minister to our elementary aged-kids in this new small-group format. Each group will have no more than ten kids plus one adult Teacher/Leader and one adult Assistant/Apprentice. Thank you for the seven adult leaders who've already stepped forward to serve our kids, but we still need more help!

Remember, we just need you once a month. We supply the materials and kids. You supply the hands and heart!

To get involved, email us family@kpc.org.

Did you know that nine of the ten least-reached people groups in the world are Muslim? At KPC, our priority mission field is the Muslim world. We must remember that prayer breaks the darkness. We will promote unity in a focused prayer effort, not only as a body at KPC, but alongside millions of believers worldwide, during the Muslim month of Ramadan (August 11 - September 9).

During Ramadan, Muslims around the world are seeking God for dreams and an encounter with Him. Join us in contending for Salvation and the Kingdom of God to come to the Muslim world.

The KPC prayer room will be open to you, and we ask that you help us keep prayer going from 8am to 8pm each day by signing up for your one-hour time slot in the lobby. Let us pray together that they too will know the joy of the Father's love and Jesus Christ as Lord.

Joy Club Tuesday, August 4 with Guest Speaker Kathy Daugherty

There are benefits to being 55 or older, especially at KPC. Just ask anyone who's been part of the JOY* Club.

Join with this group each month as they share a delicious homemade meal and meet for fellowship and encouragement. On Tuesday, August 4, the Joy Club will feature speaker Kathy Daugherty, KPC's Prayer Liaison. To make a reservation, email or call Linda Harrison at the church.

AN ORDINARY LIFE: FRANCIS SCOTT KEY
Nate as Francis Scott Key

Order Your DVD
for just $10!

In an era wherein many are deeply suspicious of the Christian faith and, in particular, its connection to our national story, it's worth remembering that faith is what drove so many of our Founders. The simple truth is that followers of Christ have profoundly-even decisively -shaped the American story.

On July 4 at KPC, Pastor Nate portrayed just one of these early American heroes-Francis Scott Key. If you missed the message or would like a copy to share, we will have available on DVD, An Ordinary Life-The Story of Francis Scott Key.

To order your copy, email Valerie Fay in the Media department or visit the CD/DVD duplicating center across from the reception desk in the KPC lobby.

DVD's will be available in August. The cost is $10 a copy payable by check to KPC.

Let's follow in the footsteps of servants like Francis Scott Key, always observing the hand of Providence guiding our lives, our nation, and our world!
